Breaking the ice...

So... my first blog. I guess I should just word vomit on this one. I decided just today that I'd try my hand at this so as not to annoy my fellow Facebook friends. If anyone cares to hear what I have to say, they can read it here.

I recently discovered that I have a strong desire to help women, and support women on their way to motherhood. You will see the word "empowerment" a lot in here I'm sure... as I'm still trying to configure the meaning of the word in the exact way that I see it. To my readers it might seem like I throw the word around a lot in different contexts. (It may be true).

As an aspiring birth doula, I've been stuffing my brain full of as much information as possible. I've learned so much lately about my body and how it works that it would take me weeks, maybe months to type out all the "fluff" I've stuffed into my brain. It's absolutely incredible...

In recent weeks I've been reading a lot of information and watching a lot of very interesting material. One of which is "More Business of Being Born." If any of you are expectant moms and have not seen "The Business of Being Born," I strongly encourage you to do so. I also recommend (strongly) that you read "Ina May's Guide to Childbirth," by Ina May Gaskin. (She's absolutely INCREDIBLE). That book changed everything for me in regards to my views on childbirth, my capabilities, and the emotional and physiological changes that happen in the process. I feel that it's very important for women to be aware of their options.... medicated, non-medicated, interventions, no interventions, VBAC, (especially VBAC), home birth, cesarean, midwives, obstetricians, doulas... there's just so much women need to know about.

**One thing I want everyone to know... I DO advocate natural *NORMAL drug-free birth, but I in NO WAY judge women who do not feel the same way I do. I have done it both ways and having done so, I've been able to develop my own opinion based on my own personal experiences. May I also note, I am a woman who happens to be in a certain minority when it comes to certain aspects of pregnancy, child birth, medications, and delivery in which I will dive into more some other time. There's no judging going on here, just facts, information, and anecdotes from my own experiences.**

*Normal birth: Defined as a birth in which there have been no medical interventions. (epidural, IV narcotics, labor augmentation medications, etc.)

By the way... fun fact that I learned in doula training... ON AVERAGE, artificial rupture of membranes (AROM) only cuts off about 17 minutes of labor. In my personal and very humble opinion........ that's 17 minutes less that I have to be in transitional labor!!! So, that 17 minutes is worth it to me.

Interesting topics worth watching for: Cytotec (I am no Dr., I did NOT go to medical school, but I think it's VERY important that women research and know about this drug), epidurals, doulas, and VBAC.... I will also probably throw in some adorable tales from the Brenning household... I swear... we need a reality show. Okay... well... that's it for today.
